The vision for Roane County Virtual Academy (RCVA) began in October 2019; our Director of Schools Dr. LaDonna McFall met with a team of educators and support staff to discuss the need for a virtual school in Roane County. With students’ needs and family dynamics changing over time, an online (virtual) public school would provide an opportunity for students who need a different setting, for whatever reason (medical, religious, behavior, family lifestyle, etc.). Our school district also wanted to reconnect with families that may have stepped away from public education, either recently or generationally, to see how we could address any needs or concerns they may have.
The RCVA team determined that our district was prepared to provide an opportunity for all students and families to ensure they are “Future Ready”, whether in a traditional classroom or flexible setting. We began researching virtual schools across the state, asking questions about where to start, what to include, and how to make it the best experience for all involved. On May 7, 2020, in a unanimous vote, the Roane County Board of Education voted to approve our virtual academy, giving us the green light to move forward with our goal of providing a comprehensive education for Roane County students through a blended learning program (online classes with on campus opportunities).
